How to Bare it all!
http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=22070
Our View:
To be honest I don’t think there is much I would add to this article. I think one major point worth repeating is that shoes are now being created with more science than ever before. This will lend itself to better products and hopefully faster runners.
What’s the Skinny on Genes?
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/16/is-fitness-all-in-the-genes/?ref=health
Our View:
In the fitness industry, we deal with this battle on a daily basis. Clients work hard, try to eat right but their success seems marginal and frustration sets in. These clients often give up in less than three months. It is important as demonstrated by new research that we understand the limitations set forth by our genetic makeup; however there are many other benefits from a life-long exercise program. A well designed exercise program can reduce blood pressure, improve lipid profiles, increase or preserve lean muscle mass, and improve health in many other ways. The biggest mistake is we often come in with expectations that are well beyond the realm of possibility. Take for example the 45 year old female that believes she can return to her high school weight and still be healthy or the 55 year old male that wants to add 25 lbs of muscle mass. These expectations can bring about goals that may just be physically (because of genetics and/or aging) impossible. On a more positive note we need to understand that with time and consistency we can attain most if not all appropriately set fitness goals. All we have to do is be HONEST about which of our goals can be accomplished and which need to be modified.
